From the streets of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Jagwa Music brings on a high-powered celebration with the interlocking rumble of drums, hacked mini casio keyboards, and hotwired megaphones grounding spitfire vocals. Jagwa Music is touring the U.S. as part of Center Stage, a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the New England Foundation for the Arts.

This Millennium Stage performance was presented in partnership with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) as part of World Refugee Day to highlight the situation of Central American refugees. She has played at key festivals like Electric Burma in Dulbin, where she shared the stage with Bono and Grammy Award winners Angelique Kidjo and Lupe Fiasco. She has appeared on Jay Leno’s show, where she joined Kris Kristofferson, Eric Burdon, Johnny Lang and Shawn Mullins, and she also collaborated with superstar Ricardo Arjona, with whom she recorded the song “Fuiste Tu” from the CD “Independiente.” Gaby won the Best New Artist at the 2013 Latin Grammys, and won the Grand Prize at the John Lennon Songwriting Contest with her song “Escondidos,” first in the Latin category, then overall. This recognition earned her an invitation by Yoko Ono to unveil the John Lennon Educational Bus.
