Six months ago, a massive flood wiped away most of Arcady. Unable to contact her family and trapped in the library, a young girl named Artemis has built the place into her sanctuary. Trying to find a way back to her Aunt Maggie’s house, Artemis soon learns of a new danger—a committee determined to claim the town for themselves. Follow Artemis, Aunt Maggie, and even a talking heron in the fight to save Arcady. Crafted with complexity and rich emotions, Artemis’ character illustrates that when she brings her whole self—disability, determination, imagination, and problem solving—to a challenge, she is strong. Through her journey, she discovers power and purpose in rebuilding her town to be better for everyone. First commissioned and released by the Kennedy Center as a radio play as part of WTYA Presents in 2021, Tim J. Lord’s play transforms into a heartening world premiere musical, with composer and co-lyricist Avi Amon, director Cara Phipps, movement director Ronya-Lee Anderson, and music director Angie Benson. The String Thing | National Symphony Orchestra Music for Young Audiences
Step right up to this daring double act of classical fun! Bassist Paul DeNola and violinist Heather LeDoux Green introduce young audiences to some of the greatest music ever written. You’ll never hear a word out of them during the concert, but with instruments in hand and a trunk full of gags, this “silent” comedic tag-team presents a hilarious program of music and mayhem. They are friends who like to have fun and tease each other. They also happen to love playing music together on their string instruments. Heather plays the violin and Paul plays the double bass (we’ll call it the bass for short). Watch how they have a great time in ways that go with the music. During the show, Heather and Paul never say a word. They communicate using costume pieces (like hats and goofy glasses) and objects (like signs). They also use mime—silently communicating through different looks on their faces and body movements. The only sound you’ll hear is amazing music, and lots of it. During the performance, listen for the song “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” A famous composer (a person who writes music) named Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (MO-tzart) wrote changes called variations for the main melody, or theme. At the end of the performance, you’ll hear music you might have heard before because it’s been used in movies, cartoons, and TV shows. The music is called the William Tell Overture, and it helps tell the story of a hero rallying his army against an enemy. Can you imagine the troops charging? Presto!, a string trio, blends music with magic and storytelling to captivate student audiences while introducing them to string instruments, musical concepts, and life lessons. In “The Case of the Vanishing Viola”, the musician’s viola has been stolen, and a detective is on the case. Could the culprit be the magician next door? Follow the clues as they learn all about string instruments and the music they play, as well as the importance of hard work and cooperation. The program features music from Beethoven to Bluegrass, with feats of magical fun throughout.
